Course Description

GD 202: Level Design & Interactive Environments builds on the foundational concepts introduced in GD 201 by diving deep into the art and craft of designing immersive, playable spaces. Using Unreal Engine as the primary development environment, students explore how physical space, environmental storytelling, and interactivity work together to shape player experience — from early blockout sketches to fully dressed, polished levels.

What You’ll Learn

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Apply core level design principles including flow, pacing, sightlines, and spatial composition
  2. Design and build playable level blockouts using Unreal Engine’s geometry and landscape tools
  3. Craft environmental narratives that communicate story and tone without dialogue
  4. Implement interactive elements such as triggers, traps, puzzles, and dynamic objects using Blueprints
  5. Use lighting, sound, and visual effects to reinforce atmosphere and guide player behavior
  6. Iterate on level designs through structured playtesting and feedback cycles

Topics Covered

Level design theory · Spatial flow & pacing · Environmental storytelling · Blockout & greyboxing techniques · Unreal Engine Landscape & World Partition tools · Interactive triggers & Blueprints · Lighting & atmosphere · Navigation & player guidance · Polish & dressing

Course Format

This course combines lecture-based instruction with weekly hands-on labs in Unreal Engine. Students will complete milestone-based projects progressing from initial greybox layouts to fully realized interactive environments, culminating in a final level presented during an end-of-term showcase.
